UV exposure breaks down the surface

Sun is the biggest enemy of a glossy gelcoat finish. Ultraviolet radiation breaks down the resin at the surface and attacks the pigments that give the boat its color. Dark blues, reds, blacks, and bright colors usually show damage sooner because their fading is easier to see. White gelcoat is not immune - it simply hides early oxidation better.

The first warning sign is often a loss of depth. The hull may still look clean, but it no longer reflects light like it used to. Left alone, that dullness becomes oxidation: a dry, chalky layer that rubs off on your hand or microfiber towel.
