Why Rust Stains Stick to Fiberglass
Fiberglass boats are protected by gel coat, a hard outer finish that gives the hull its color and shine. Gel coat is durable, but it can be slightly porous, especially as it ages, oxidizes, or loses its wax protection. When rainwater, wash water, or spray runs over rusting metal, it carries iron particles onto that finish. Those particles settle into the surface and leave the familiar brown-orange trail.
